What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a fully legal road fuel designed to closely approximate fossil diesel, but which is mainly derived from renewable plant sources, or even better, from vegetable oil that has already seen use in food preparation. This used oil is currently regarded as waste and often ends up as landfill. Regardless of source, the chosen oils need chemical modification before they can be relied upon to be a true alternative fuel, which is done by adding alcohol to them along with a catalyzing agent.

This process produces mono alkyl esters, which are our biodiesel, and a by-product, glycerine, which can be used for a variety of other industrial processes. The benefits of this transesterification are lower viscosity which aids flow at all temperatures, but particularly when cold and a higher flash point compared to straight oil and most importantly the removal of glycerides, which could cause long term difficulties for engines if not discarded, with incomplete combustion, piston ring gumming and injector coking as the most likely problems. This is clearly a major benefit biodiesel has over other, unaltered, plant based fuels, such as straight vegetable oil (SVO).
