EN590 is the European standard for fossil diesel, EN 14214 is the proposed standard for biodiesel (B100) although these figures may fluctuate according to the source of the base product.

Biodiesel has major advantages not commonly listed on composition charts, however, which include a very low sulphur content, increased lubricating properties, a strong cleansing action plus the ability to biodegrade at least 4 times more quickly than fossil diesel. It is also safer on the skin being no more of an irritant than a salt solution and is generally far less toxic to humans and the wider environment than fossil derived fuel. It has a higher flashpoint which is a safety improvement and the increased cetane number can potentially increase power. The only drawbacks are an increased water content and reduced oxidation resistance when stored for long periods, although additives are available to counteract the latter.
