One area where biodiesel unarguably holds its own compared to fossil fuel is its carbon footprint. Virtually nothing can be described as carbon neutral, as any manufactured product will require a variety of inputs, but according to Ademe, the French Environment Agency, one tonne of biodiesel used to replace fossil fuel will reduce CO2 emissions by 2.5 tonnes. This level of reduction is accepted by many European agencies and DEFRA in the UK published a report which stated that CO2 savings over ULSD could be in the region of 70%, with an overall reduction of all greenhouse gases of more than 50%. These figures are based on intensively farmed, inorganically fertilised virgin oil crops, and could be bettered by altered farming practice, plus the use of collected waste vegetable oil would further improve the figures dramatically in biodiesel’s favour, as it would entail the re-use of a waste product. In addition they assert that there would be a positive shift in the economic balance of the rural economy from any swap to biofuel production from crops.
