Oxides of Nitrogen

Road traffic is responsible for half the nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) present in UK air, with urban areas obviously suffering the worst effects. These gases contribute to the formation of ground level ozone and are directly linked to lung diseases and are generally regarded as the most pressing air quality issue for city dwellers. Biodiesel has no beneficial effect on reducing these gases, although technology in the form of catalytic converters has made a huge impact on their reduction.
