Particulate Matter

The second most important tailpipe emission for air quality, again a direct result of road traffic, levels of particulates have fallen steadily since the 1980s thanks to better engine technology and the recent development of regenerative traps which can remove 99% of all particulates from diesel exhaust fumes. Biodiesel can reduce the amount of larger sized particulates emitted by a significant amount, as much as 20% even on moderate blends, but only in older indirect injection vehicles. In modern common rail cars equipped with traps, its use provides negligible benefit.
