Sulphur

Sulphur dioxide was a major contributor to acid rain, although air borne levels have dropped since the 1980s, with road transport’s contribution declining in line with sulphur content in diesel. UK Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel available today has 33 parts per million sulphur content on average, and will soon become Zero Sulphur Diesel with less than 10ppm. Biodiesel is commonly regarded as sulphur free ( and our B100 will have less than 3ppm) however, different tests have shown levels as high as 80ppm in both US and EEC sourced biodiesel which would not even meet EN590. Selecting feedstock and manufacturer is therefore obviously an issue and we are confident that we have sourced the best available.

If you would like to read some detailed emissions data try:

Plus there is reference to B5 in a document by Ricardo during a study on Straight Vegetable Oil to be found at:

which also clearly shows the air quality benefits of using a properly produced biodiesel rather than an unmodified oil.

Regardless of source, when you are assessing claimed impacts from any fuel, please check age and type of vehicle used in any test data (it can sometimes even be a single cylinder stationary engine) sulphur content of the biodiesel and base fuel, plus the test cycle used, as it all has a major bearing on the results.
