Biodiesel and emissions

If you surf the net, there are a multitude of claims made for biodiesel, however, these can be hard to substantiate in a European context, as they mainly originate from tests in the USA, using dirtier fuels, both fossil and renewable, in vehicles which are not comparable to those found on our roads today, in either size or technology, and even the test cycle used to reach the conclusions is very different, which in itself can produce wide variations.
The issue of assessing emissions is further hampered by the differing results in the few studies published regardless of origin, and the weight given to the importance in changes to individual gases, plus even within the EEC, fossil diesel sulphur content varied through the 1990s with the UK leading the way on Ultra Low Sulphur adoption by many years, so the variables are legion.
