If you surf the net, there are a multitude of claims made for biodiesel,
however, these can be hard to substantiate in a European context, as they
mainly originate from tests in the USA, using dirtier fuels, both fossil
and renewable, in vehicles which are not comparable to those found on our
roads today, in either size or technology, and even the test cycle used
to reach the conclusions is very different, which in itself can produce
wide variations.
The issue of assessing emissions is further hampered by the differing results
in the few studies published regardless of origin, and the weight given
to the importance in changes to individual gases, plus even within the EEC,
fossil diesel sulphur content varied through the 1990s with the UK leading
the way on Ultra Low Sulphur adoption by many years, so the variables are
legion.
