These are compounds like Benzene, Toluene, Xylene plus dozens of toxic
and carcinogenic compounds released both as burnt and unburnt by-products
of the combustion process. A petrol engine releases ten times more of these
compounds than a diesel, but a catalytic converter fitted to either engine
type will greatly reduce the amount emitted. Indirect injection diesel engines
without the benefits of such technology will produce less toxic compounds
when run on biodiesel, with more benefit accruing as blend ratios increase.
